November Fishing Forecast • Election Day Prediction:Fishing Will Be Fantastic • Bass Bltz The Island • Take A Vet Fishing

November looks to be a great month for both our local fresh and saltwater anglers. Striped bass can still be found all over the south shore with many getting fish up to 40 pounds. The best places to find bass would be Cupsogue Beach County Park  along with our inlets like moriches and Shinecock. The open beaches at smiths point and Jones beach have both been showing a great pick of fish.

Another week of great fishing in the ocean, bays and off the beaches and docks of Long Island. The Striped Bass fishing is in full swing. Party, charter and private boats are getting in on the action between Moriches and Fire Island inlets from 20 to 60 feet of water. Either Diamond Jigs or ava jigs  the bass, when they are feeding on sand eels or you can try your luck at snagging bunker (off the many ocean formed bunker pods) in a method called snag & drop. Both methods have been yielding many fish but snagging bunker has seen more consistent big fish.

In the Surf,  Anglers have been focusing around Smith Point County Park  and Shinnecock Inlet and Cupsogue Beach County Park for bass and are getting good numbers of small to medium sized fish using diamond jigs,  needlefish or bucktails.

The use of a teaser is helping. Getting double headers is not uncommon when fishing with a feathered of plastic teaser above the lure.

Don't underestimate the Local docks for some exciting Bass action too. The 18-29' fish have been sought after throughout the Great South Bay. Plenty of action, lots of fun but not many keepers. Most of these fish are taken on tins, fresh bunker and clam bait.

Anglers are also reporting about another productive spot along the south shore. This has been Shinnecock Canal.  Easy access and can produce, Bass, Blues, Weakfish and Porgies.  Lures or bait are fine. The best time to fish the canal is when the locks are closed.  It's best to call the lock master for current info @ 631-852-8299.

The North Shore is seeing some "bass blitzes" too along the shoreline. Like the south shore many of the fish seem to be smaller but still a lot of fun on proper tackle.

The albies have been mixed in with the bass so be sure to carry some Joe Baggs Resin jigs in your bag too.

Shore-bound Blackfish has been productive for those trying. This time of the year they tend to be in close. Keepers and shorts are mixed together. They have been taking green crabs and Blackfish Jig.  Try north shore rock piles or the south shore inlets for them. They will usually be hanging very close to structure. Stock up on extra rigs and jigs! Losing them is very common when blackfishing. 

Tackle Tip: One way around losing the entire rig is to tie a lighter piece of monofilament with a sinker loop for the sinker loop. Usually when you get snagged in the rocks its the sinker that will get hung up. This method enables you to get back the hooks from the rigs without snapping off everything.

The other bottom fish like seabass, porgies, cod, pollock and ling, will all hit a well baited clam on a hi-low bait rig. There are a few keeper weakfish out in the oceans as well. The hi-low rigs made fin strike are well suited for these species and applications. When bottom fishing be sure to bring plenty of sinkers ranging from 8-16oz depending on how deep you are fishing.

Fishing is hot all over the island especially when it comes to black sea bass and porgy. While most of these have moved in to deeper water it’s has made our wrecks hotspots for humphed porgy and sea bass. Both the moriches and Shinnecock reefs are holding plenty porgies and sea bass the best way to catch these fish would be clam or squid bait, clam chum is another great idea for fishing reefs. Long Island has a smorgasbord of fish. Cod, Sea Bass, Striped Bass, Porgies,, Bluefish and Blackfish. Jigs worked well and bait did fine too. what to expect next month: Good fishing will continue!

In the freshwater scene. The lakes will be re-stocked by the beginning of November. for the fall. The live shiners are a great option if you just want to cast a line out and sit and wait. A float, a number 1 hook and a live shiner are great combo to catch bass, pickerel, perch and crappie. Night crawlers will get you the other panfish of the lake like bluegills, pumpkinseeds and perch. Artificial lures like curly-tail grubs or spinners will get bite from a variety of lake species.

Freshwater fishing in November is another great option for any angler because the state will stock local lakes with both brown and rainbow trout.

West  lake were both stocked in the last weekend in September and will be Stocked again the first weekend of November. Upper lake in yapank has also been stocked and will be stocked again the first weekend of November.
